The cover of Consent on Trial: Reclaiming Voice, Boundaries, and Desire features an empty courtroom, with the judge's seat standing behind a table bearing a gavel. I chose this imagery to symbolize the judgment, scrutiny, and questioning that often surround conversations about consent.

About the book

Consent on Trial: Reclaiming Voice, Boundaries, and Desire. In Consent on Trial, I explore the complex and often misunderstood realities of sexual consent, coercion, and the pressure people experience in intimate relationships. I wrote this book to challenge the belief that saying “yes” always means wanting to, that silence equals agreement, or that being in a relationship gives someone automatic access to another person's body. Through real-life-inspired case studies, reflections, and research-based discussions, I examine how both women and men can experience sexual pressure, emotional coercion, and situations in which their boundaries are ignored. I address the confusion, guilt, emotional numbness, resentment, and loss of self-trust that can follow when people repeatedly comply with what they do not truly want. I also confront the harmful stereotypes that make it difficult for survivors to speak. Women may be blamed for their compliance, while men may feel ashamed to admit that they experienced pressure or unwanted sexual encounters. I want to make it clear that consent is not determined by gender, relationship status, physical responses, or the absence of resistance. Genuine consent must be freely given, and every person has the right to make decisions about their own body. Beyond examining the problem, I explore the journey toward reclaiming one's voice, rebuilding boundaries, understanding past experiences, and communicating honestly with a partner. I encourage readers to recognize coercion for what it is, release misplaced self-blame, and understand that healing does not require them to minimize what happened. My purpose is to open difficult conversations about intimacy, autonomy, and the difference between genuine desire and compliance. I want readers to question what they have been taught, confront the misconceptions they may have accepted, and recognize that love and intimacy should never require someone to surrender their right to choose. Through this book, I invite readers to look beyond the question of whether someone said yes and ask the question that matters most: Were they truly free to say no?
