Outside of the written word, I am a wife and a dog mom. I have a team of rescued Alaskan malamute and malamute crosses and together we explore the vast wilderness that is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Most of my childhood was spent with the crew of the USS Enterprise, and you will notice that influence in a lot of my writing. I devour books, and absolutely love everything fantasy and sci-fi. Jeanne Rietzke

I began writing in 2020 with a children's book series entitled Caroline, The Painted Turtle. Before then, I worked as a wildlife artist. I illustrated and published the first two children's books in 2022. While all that was happening, I realized I wanted to write more. I took the NaNoWriMo challenge in 2021. In 30 days, I wrote 50,000 words. I loved the story, but knew it was a novella and awkward. For three years, I wrote, rewrote, added the murder, added the history, added the food, and kept going. My Beta readers were begging me to publish. Inherited Death emerged in April 2025. So far, we have won seven Indie Awards. The depth of the main character, Melissa Fairmont, has captivated readers, reviewers, and judges. She's a complicated woman who has big feelings and a past that she is grieving as much as she grieves for her parents. I hope you enjoy the story. I am currently working on the second book in the series.

This style of gentle, imaginative collaboration is ideal when winding down at day's end. When our kids were little, we read and read and read to them, especially at bedtime. Books galore. Sometimes my imagination was necessary so I told them about adventures of a bubblegum family in bubblegum land and all the amazing bubblegum sights they saw. Throughout each brief story, the "bubblegum family" walks through a soft, pastel world without fixed names, defined faces, or set destinations. At key moments along the path, the narrative simply stops—inviting a brief, intentional pause before looking over a ridge or beyond a valley. We aren't meant to get to know 'Mr. or Mrs. Bubblegum'. Their family is simply the vehicle to spark a toddler's imagination to wander through dreamy landscapes while creating bubblegum bridges, clouds, mountains and more as they drift to sleep. Imagination drives a child's future. These are actual stories I made up when our five kids were toddlers. Grown, they are: Artist, Lawyer, Outdoorsman, Medical Physicist, Civil Engineer. AI caveat - In 2024 I finally got around to sharing the stories and got to typing. Illustrations are by me, using Canva and Microsoft Bing (prior to AI hullabaloo). At least four versions of every single image were drafted and then selected. I did a lot of manual 'flower' or 'animal' etc. creation and placement in the images, so I feel any anti-AI comments are well placed but misdirected. The illustrations were laborious, very time consuming and I remind the reader that these are 'my stories'. I dreamt them up and told to our kids to engage their imagination after 'the pause'. The real images are in your toddlers mind as opposed to what I created on the page.
