KDP Select vs Going Wide for Indie Authors in 2026

When you publish a Kindle ebook, one early decision shapes everything after it: enrol in KDP Select or not. Say yes and your ebook stays exclusive to Amazon for 90 days. Say no and you can sell it everywhere, but you give up Kindle Unlimited.

Both routes work for some authors and disappoint others. This guide sets out what Select really asks of you, how Kindle Unlimited pays, what going wide involves, and how to switch without breaking the rules.

What is KDP Select?

KDP Select is a free, optional programme for Kindle ebooks. Each enrolment lasts 90 days and renews automatically for another 90 unless you turn auto-renew off.

In return, your ebook goes into Kindle Unlimited (KU), the subscription where readers pay a monthly fee to read enrolled books. It stays on sale as normal too, so you still earn from buyers. You also get promotion tools and a higher royalty in four countries.

It covers the ebook only. Your paperback, hardcover and audiobook aren't part of it.

KDP Select exclusivity: what's allowed and what isn't

While you're enrolled, KDP's terms say you can't sell or distribute the ebook, or a substantially similar book, in digital format anywhere else. That includes free full copies on your website or as a newsletter gift.

What you can still do:

  • Sell print, audio and other formats anywhere.
  • Share up to 10% of the book elsewhere as a sample.
  • Supply the ebook to public libraries. KDP's enrolment page now says the ebook "can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries", so older advice that rules libraries out is out of date.

Breaking exclusivity is costly. The terms let Amazon withhold or claw back your KU earnings, hold all your royalties for up to 90 days while it investigates, and bar you from Select.

Print is a separate decision, and KDP vs IngramSpark compares the two main routes for it.

Kindle Unlimited for authors: how the pay works

You aren't paid per borrow. Each month Amazon sets a pot called the KDP Select Global Fund, announces it in the KDP community forum, and shares it out by pages read, measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP).

  • You're paid only for pages a reader reads for the first time.
  • Each reader counts for up to 3,000 KENP per title.
  • KENP is Amazon's standardised count, so it won't match your print page count. Your book's figure is on its Promote and Advertise page.

Amazon's own example: with a $10 million fund and 100 million pages read in a month, a 200-page ebook read in full 100 times earns $2,000. Read halfway on average, it earns $1,000. Because the fund and total pages change monthly, so does what a page is worth.

Enrolled ebooks can also win a discretionary monthly KDP Select bonus.

KDP Select promotions and the 70% royalty in four countries

Each 90-day term, you can run one type of promotion, not both. Unused days don't roll over. The details come from KDP's pages on Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals.

Free Book Promotion Kindle Countdown Deal
What it is Your ebook is free A timed discount with a countdown clock
How long Up to 5 days per term, together or split One deal per term, up to 7 days
Where All KDP marketplaces Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk only
Royalty None while free Your usual rate on the deal price
Rules Can start from day two of the term Enrolled 30 days first, list price $2.99 to $24.99 on Amazon.com, price unchanged 30 days before and 14 days after

Select also lifts your royalty in Brazil, Japan, India and Mexico from 35% to 70%, as long as your prices there meet the 70% rules. Still settling on a price? See how to price your self-published book.

What going wide means in self-publishing

Going wide means keeping your ebook on Kindle without Select and adding it to other stores:

  • Apple Books, through Apple Books for Authors
  • Kobo, through Kobo Writing Life, which pays up to 70%, asks for no exclusivity, and offers optional OverDrive library distribution and Kobo Plus, its non-exclusive subscription
  • Barnes & Noble, through Barnes & Noble Press
  • Google Play Books, through its Partner Center
  • Libraries, through OverDrive (the company behind the Libby app), cloudLibrary or Hoopla.

You can go direct to each, or use an aggregator that sends one upload to many stores. Draft2Digital reaches Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Tolino, OverDrive, cloudLibrary, Hoopla and more. It charges a one-time $20 activation fee, keeps about 10% of the retail price of each sale, and charges $12 a year to accounts earning under $100 a year (Draft2Digital's FAQ).

Google Play Books isn't on its list, so upload there directly. For a wider comparison, see the 3 best self-publishing platforms for authors in 2026. Spreading sales across stores is the same thinking as turning one book into multiple income streams.

KDP Select vs wide: pros and cons

KDP Select Going wide
Where your ebook sells Amazon, plus public libraries Amazon and any store you choose
Subscription income Kindle Unlimited page reads Kobo Plus and others, store by store
Promotions Free days or a Countdown Deal Each store's own promotions
Brazil, Japan, India, Mexico 70% if price rules are met 35%
Commitment 90 days, auto-renews None
Admin One dashboard Several dashboards, or an aggregator's cut
Risk All ebook income from one retailer Spread across retailers

Is KDP Select worth it? Who each route tends to suit

Select tends to suit you if:

  • You write long series in genres where readers binge, such as romance, thrillers and fantasy, and many of them read through KU rather than buying.
  • You want free days or a Countdown Deal to get a new book read. With Amazon as your only shop, your KDP categories and keywords matter even more.
  • You'd rather write than manage several dashboards.

Going wide tends to suit you if:

  • Your readers buy on Apple, Kobo or Google, or you want subscriptions beyond KU.
  • You sell ebooks from your own website or give full copies away.
  • You'd rather not rely on one company for all your ebook income.

Select works book by book, so you can keep one series in KU and another wide.

How to switch between KDP Select and wide

To leave Select:

  1. On your Bookshelf, click the three dots beside the ebook and choose Manage KDP Select to see your end date.
  2. Click Manage KDP Select Enrollment and untick "Automatically renew this book's enrollment". The current term still runs to its end.
  3. Use any promotion days first. A Countdown Deal must end at least 14 days before a term you aren't renewing ends.
  4. Prepare your other store accounts, but keep the ebook off sale elsewhere until the end date passes.
  5. Publish wide. KU borrowers can keep reading, and you're still paid for their first-time pages.

To join Select:

  1. Remove the ebook from every other store, aggregator, bundle and giveaway. Public library listings can stay.
  2. Search each store yourself to confirm it's gone.
  3. Go to Marketing, choose Enroll an eBook under KDP Select, pick the book and click Enroll.

Sending ebook ARCs? The terms make no exception for free review copies, so read the wording yourself before sending ARC files of an enrolled ebook. For the rest of the planning, see how to get ARC readers for your new book.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Are most top books in your Amazon categories in Kindle Unlimited?
  2. Is your ebook live anywhere else, including your website?
  3. Do you want readers on Apple, Kobo or Google?
  4. Would free days or a Countdown Deal fit your launch?
  5. Do you sell in Brazil, Japan, India or Mexico?
  6. Would you rather pay an aggregator about 10% than run several accounts?
  7. Have you set a reminder a week before the term ends?

Yes to 1, 4 or 5 leans towards Select. Yes to 2, 3 or 6 leans towards wide. Whichever way you go, question 7 keeps the next renewal your decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave KDP Select before the 90 days are up?

Only within three days of the enrolment period starting, through Manage KDP Select Enrollment. After that, KDP asks you to contact them. Unpublishing pauses the term but doesn't end your exclusivity, so the usual route is to turn off auto-renew and wait.

Does KDP Select include my paperback or audiobook?

No, it covers the Kindle ebook only. Audiobooks have their own version of the choice: ACX, for example, asks you to pick exclusive or non-exclusive distribution.

Can a KDP Select ebook be in libraries?

Yes. KDP's enrolment page allows public library distribution during the term. An aggregator such as Draft2Digital lets you pick channels one by one, so you can switch on its library channels while leaving every retail store off.

Is KDP Select worth it for a first book?

It can be, especially in series-heavy genres, because free days and KU borrows help a new name get read. Try one term, look at your KENP and sales figures, then decide whether to renew.

Neither route is permanent. Select runs in 90-day terms and wide has no lock-in, so choose what fits the book you have now, watch your numbers for a term, and adjust. Your next book is free to go the other way.
