How Many Pages Is My Book? Word Count to Page Count
Your manuscript is nearly done, and suddenly everyone wants a page count. Your cover designer needs one to size the spine, and the KDP printing cost calculator needs one before it will tell you what a copy costs. All you have is your word processor's number, which has little to do with a finished paperback.
The good news: printed pages follow word count fairly predictably once you know your trim size and typesetting. Here are realistic words-per-page ranges, a word count to page count table, and a way to get your own number.
If you're still deciding how long the book should be, start with how many words your book should be.
Why there's no single words-per-page number
Two books with the same word count can differ by a hundred pages. The main reasons:
- Trim size. A 6 x 9 page holds far more text than a 5 x 8 page.
- Font and font size. Some typefaces are compact, others wide, and half a point of size changes every line.
- Line spacing. More space between lines means fewer lines per page.
- Margins. Wider margins mean fewer words per page, and KDP's minimum inside margin grows as the page count rises (KDP trim size and margins).
- Dialogue versus dense prose. Dialogue means lots of short paragraphs, each leaving white space on its last line.
- Chapter openings and scene breaks. Chapters usually start partway down a fresh page, and every scene break takes space without adding words.
So every figure below is an estimate, for planning only.
Manuscript pages vs printed book pages
The old rule of roughly 250 words per page comes from manuscripts: double-spaced, 12-point type, on Letter or A4 paper. The Chicago Manual of Style's Shop Talk blog gives the guideline as 250 to 300 words per double-spaced page (CMOS Shop Talk).
That's not a paperback page. And if you draft single-spaced, a 12-point page holds about 500 words (Reedsy), so an 80,000-word draft that fills 160 pages in Word can become a 320-page paperback at 5 x 8.
How many words per page in a book? Estimates by trim size
No official body sets a words-per-page figure, and the published estimates don't agree exactly:
| Trim size (inches) | Gatekeeper Press | ebookpbook | Raven Book Design |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 | 240 to 260 | about 240 | not given |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | 300 to 330 | about 290 | about 390 (fiction) |
| 6 x 9 | 360 to 390 | about 345 | about 475 (non-fiction) |
Gatekeeper Press assumes 11.5-point text with standard margins. ebookpbook bases its averages on its own templates and finished books. Raven Book Design assumes 11-point Garamond, and its figures run noticeably higher.
In plain terms: plan on about 240 to 260 words a page at 5 x 8, 290 to 330 at 5.5 x 8.5, and 345 to 390 at 6 x 9. A tightly set book fits more.
Word count to page count table
The table assumes 250 words per page at 5 x 8, 300 at 5.5 x 8.5 and 350 at 6 x 9, roughly the middle of the estimates above, rounded to the nearest 10 pages. It counts body text only.
| Word count | 5 x 8 (250 a page) | 5.5 x 8.5 (300 a page) | 6 x 9 (350 a page) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40,000 | 160 | 130 | 110 |
| 50,000 | 200 | 170 | 140 |
| 60,000 | 240 | 200 | 170 |
| 70,000 | 280 | 230 | 200 |
| 80,000 | 320 | 270 | 230 |
| 90,000 | 360 | 300 | 260 |
| 100,000 | 400 | 330 | 290 |
| 120,000 | 480 | 400 | 340 |
Typesetting moves these a lot. Take 80,000 words at 6 x 9: at 345 words a page that's about 230 pages, at 390 about 205, and at Raven's 475 about 170.
Then add what isn't body text: Raven Book Design suggests half a page per chapter, since chapters open lower on the page. A 30-chapter novel gains about 15 pages before front and back matter.
How many pages is an ebook? Kindle, KENP and print length
An ebook has no fixed page count. Kindle readers can change the font, size, line spacing and margins (Kindle text display help), so a "page" changes with every setting. That's why Kindle tracks your place with locations and can show time left in the chapter or book.
Three numbers matter to authors:
- Print length. Shown on Kindle listings. Amazon says the page counts on its detail pages come from other sources, so treat this one as a rough guide.
- KENP. Kindle Unlimited pays by Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, a count Amazon calculates with standard settings for font, line height and line spacing. You'll find yours on the Promote and Advertise page in your KDP Bookshelf (KDP Kindle Unlimited royalties).
- Pages read. You're paid only for pages a customer reads for the first time, up to 3,000 KENP per title per customer.
Why your page count matters
Printing cost. On KDP, a black-ink paperback of 110 to 828 pages sold on Amazon.com costs $1.00 plus $0.012 per page to print (KDP printing cost). So 80,000 words at 5 x 8 (about 320 pages) costs about $4.84 a copy, and at 6 x 9 (about 230 pages) about $3.76. Other marketplaces have their own rates. That gap comes out of your royalty, so it feeds into how you price your self-published book and the real cost of self-publishing a book.
Spine width and spine text. KDP sets spine width at 0.0025 inches per page on cream paper and 0.002252 on white (KDP cover guidelines), so a 320-page book on cream has a 0.8-inch spine. KDP prints spine text from 79 pages (the same page also says "more than 79", so aim for 80). A 20,000-word novella at 6 x 9 is about 57 pages, too thin for spine text. At 5 x 8 it's about 80.
Reader expectations. Readers see the page count before they buy and use it to judge whether a book is a quick read or a commitment.
Kindle Unlimited reads. Because Kindle Unlimited pays per page read, a finished long book earns more than a finished short one. Abandoned pages earn nothing, though.
How to work out your book's real page count
- Choose your trim size. See KDP paperback trim size, margins and bleed if you haven't.
- Set up your page. Use your real font, size, line spacing and margins, in a template or formatting app.
- Pour in one typical chapter. Pick a middle chapter with your usual mix of dialogue and description.
- Divide words by pages. If a 4,200-word chapter fills 14 pages, you're at 300 words a page.
- Scale it up. Divide your total word count by that figure, add half a page per chapter, then add front and back matter.
- Confirm in the final preview. Your tool's page count updates as you change settings. Take the final number from the full-quality preview (Vellum's default Draft preview skips some layout features). For tool options, see book formatting tools for your first book.
Worked example: 80,000 words at 300 a page is about 267 pages. Add 15 for 30 chapter openings and, say, 8 for front and back matter, and you're at about 290.
What to do if your book is too long or too short
Start with layout, which changes the page count without touching a word:
- Trim size. Moving from 5 x 8 to 6 x 9 cuts pages by more than a quarter in the table above.
- Font size and line spacing. A small change adds up across every page. Keep it comfortable: Gatekeeper's and Raven's estimates assume 11 to 11.5-point type.
- Margins. Stay above KDP's minimums. Generous margins add pages; tighter ones remove them.
- Chapter starts. Starting every chapter on a right-hand page adds blank left-hand pages.
If you're still far off, it's a story question. A book far over length needs real cuts, and editing your book without feeling overwhelmed breaks that into stages. A short book may simply be a novella. If you add, add scenes the story needs, not filler.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages is 50,000 words?
About 200 pages at 5 x 8, 170 at 5.5 x 8.5 and 140 at 6 x 9, before front matter and chapter openings. As a double-spaced manuscript, it's roughly 170 to 200 pages.
How many pages is 80,000 words?
About 320 pages at 5 x 8, 270 at 5.5 x 8.5 and 230 at 6 x 9. A tightly set book can come out shorter.
How many words per page in a book?
Most paperback estimates fall between about 240 and 390 words a page, depending on trim size and typesetting, and a tightly set 6 x 9 can reach about 475. A Kindlepreneur survey of authors put the fiction average at about 280. A double-spaced manuscript page holds 250 to 300.
How many pages is a novel?
There's no set number: it follows your word count and trim size. A 70,000-word novel is about 200 to 280 pages across the three common sizes.
Why is my Kindle page count different from my paperback?
They're measured differently. Your paperback count comes from your print file, KENP is Amazon's normalised count for Kindle Unlimited, and the print length on your listing comes from other sources. Amazon itself says KENP may differ from the detail page.
Once you have your own words-per-page figure, page count stops being a mystery and becomes a setting you can adjust. Format one chapter this week, do the division, and you'll have your number before your cover designer asks.
